Udvartan: Ayurveda Herbal Powder Massage in Rishikesh | Health Benefits

The word “Udvartan” means rubbing the body by Churna (coarse herbal powders), so it can be understood as powder massage (Medicinal herbal powders). This unique procedure is used for various health issues as well as for slimming & cellulitis.

There are two types of procedures followed under Udvartan:

1. Udgharshana
2. Utsadana

Udgharshana:

Rubbing the body with dry herbal powder (without adding any oil or liquid) is called Udgharsana.

Utsadana:

Rubbing the body with herbal paste (mixture of dry herbal powder and medicated oils or other liquids) is called Utsadan.

Procedure:

These procedures are usually done in morning hours for better results. We start our therapy with pad-dhavan (foot ritual) and gentle head massage which is followed by Dhanwantri prayer in sitting posture.

Then a guest/patient is asked to lie down in supine position (lie on back). Then massage is started from legs, arms, chest, abdomen, back and gluteal region and it is done in upward direction means towards heart direction (against circulation) for certain time as per purpose or disease condition.

Udvartan is done by two hands (One person) or by four hands (two persons) for better results in a synchronized way. Post care tips are advised by Ayurveda Doctors.

Duration: 55-60 minutes.

Course of Therapy: For best results 5 to 7 days. For weight reduction, minimum 10 therapies are advisable.

Drugs used for Udvartan:

Kolkulathyadi churna- for neurological conditions; Triphala churna- skin disease & obesity; Nimbadi churna- skin diseases

Other herbs & oils used in combination for different health conditions:

Triphala oil, Karpasyadi taila, Ushira, Khadira, Aragvadh, Guduchi, Nalpamaradi churna, Kottamchukyadi churna

How Udvartana works for your body:

In Udvartan, friction of body with medicated powder causes dilatation of vessels and increase bhrajak pitta (one type of pitta situated in skin). Which help to exfoliate the skin, removes the toxins and increase the peripheral blood circulation.

This therapy effectively mobilizes and liquefies stored fat which is disposed from body due to rectification of dhatuagni (metabolism at tissue level). Now cells start to throw toxins (ama) from body and cleanse themselves. Udvartan restores health by clearing the body excess fat and undigested food (cholesterol) and toxins. Drugs used for Udvartan which are hot (in potency), dry (rooksha), having lekhniya( Scraping) property work effectively on tissues.
